"RIT-RITEMON KAYONG UPRISING"
Born on November 26, 1853 in Sarrat, Ilocos Norte, Don Jose Jamias Ver served as the 100th governadorcillo of the town during the Spanish regime in 1887-1888.
When the Philippine Independence was proclaimed by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo on June 12, 1898 at Kawit, Cavite, all able-bodied men from Sarrat led by Don Jose or Captain Jose Rose in arms against the Americans whom they considered like the Spaniards who would subject them to tyranny.
Armed only with bolos and pointed bamboo poles, they at tacked the American garrison in nearby Laoag, the same building now houses the Holy Spirit Academy "Rit-Ritemon, Kayong."The leader shouted when the assault at pre-dawn was massed against the bamboo fences that separated Laoag from Sarrat "Manganta to't Galletasen, Agcaballo tanto't Dakkelen" (Rip the fence apart, brod. We shall soon eat cookies and ride on tall horses). Many of his men died on the spot as the American fired their machine guns.
Capitan Jose was punished and killed by the American commander, he died shirtless under the scorching heat of the sun. |
